- Body statistics – Body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage – Blood pressure and resting heart rate – Peak flow – VO2 Max
Body statistics
We will measure your vital statistics in both centimeters and inches and also take your height and weight measurements.
Body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage
This fitness test will give you a clear indication of your body fat contents, and when re-tested, will show the body fat loss that you have achieved. It will also show that you are losing fat and not muscle! Your BMI is measured with a simple height to weight ratio calculation.
Blood pressure and resting heart rate
This test will show your current readings and will help identify any heart problems. We will review both readings to demonstrate how your readings have lowered after regular exercise.
Peak flow
This fitness test shows the efficiency of your lungs by measuring the force of breath during inhalation and exhalation. This reading will improve and you will find that you become less out of breath following regular exercise.
VO2 Max
This is a short physical exercise on either a treadmill or an exercise bike for approximately 5-7 minutes. You will not be required to run or hill climb on the bike but will work to your own ability with the end result giving a good indication of your current level of fitness. This will aid in producing a bespoke exercise programme in order to improve your overall fitness.
How long does the fitness test take?
Depending on your current level of fitness it should take between 15 and 30 minutes.
What do I need to wear?
Shorts and tee-shirt would be best as we will take your body measurements (over your clothes.) Adequate gym footwear (trainers) will also be required for the VO2 max test.
What do I need to bring with me to the fitness test?
Adequate clothing and footwear is a must. Please also bring details of any medical problems or history and any medication you are taking. On occasions you be required to gain authorisation from a doctor with a doctor’s note to allow you to undertake an exercise regime. We will always listen to the advice given to us by a doctor, physiotherapist or specialist.
When is the best time to take the fitness test?
We recommend that you leave at least 1 hour after consuming a meal to allow the food to digest but so you are not exercising on an empty stomach. Try to take the test when you are ‘at rest’ and ‘de-stressed’ so to not push up your resting heart rate and blood pressure readings.
