New trends are something to get excited about and add a pop of wow to your wedding. Make your “I do” one to remember with floral displays that capture the imagination, vibrant colours to add a bold splash, and creative place-cards that get everyone talking…
At Burnham Beeches Hotel, we love a wedding, and no-one more so than Sarah, our fantastic wedding co-ordinator. After nearly a year and a half of making couples’ dreams a reality at Burnham Beeches, she’s in the know when it comes to the art of the happily-ever-after.
With peak wedding season about to kick off, she’s been taking a look at what’s hot for this year and is sharing her best trend tips for the most stylish wedding of 2018 (after Harry and Meghan’s, of course).
1. Go Ultra-Violet
OK, maybe not ultra-violet everything, but this amazing colour can be incorporated into your wedding theme if you want to have Pantone’s Colour of the Year make an appearance at your big day. Last year it was all about shades of green, which made for some beautifully fresh looks, but in 2018 we’re loving pops of purple. Think shining agate place cards that add a natural vibe to your tables, bouquets of iris and orchids, and purple embellishments on your wedding cake.
2. Food for Thought
The 2018 wedding is centred around being bold and doing what you love, and that includes the food you serve at your wedding breakfast. This year is all about going a little bit out-there. Experiment with exotic cuisine, surprise your guests with tacos, sushi or a banquet of curry. In the evening, go for gourmet crowd pleasers, get quirky with a food van or set up a create-your-own gin bar. If you prefer to keep the main courses traditional, go wild with your cake and introduce metallic effects and fantastic flavours such as chocolate mocha or cookies & cream (so long, vanilla). More of a savoury kinda couple? Why not opt for a cake made of layered cheese, adorned with cascading grapes and ripe figs – following the rules is so last year.
3. Bright & Bold
Bouquets are expected to be bold, dazzling and beautiful this year. Single stem bouquets are striking and elegant – think a statement tropical stem for a summer wedding, or a large-headed bloom such as a peony. Go dark, moody and dramatic with vintage purples and burgundy. When it comes to decoration, play with height and create space on your tables with hanging displays and clouds of baby’s breath. The popular greenery theme from 2017 continues, with couples opting for rustic-looking potted plants lining the aisle and bohemian wedding wreaths made from wild flowers and sweet-smelling woods to symbolise eternity.
4. Pearls of Wisdom
That’s the Something Old sorted if you’re lucky enough to have family pearls to wear on your wedding day. The pearl accessory is making a comeback, but not just in the form of a necklace – delicate earrings, head pieces and classy dress embellishments are lovely ways to include the lucky pearls in your wedding attire. Elegant sister to the sparkling sequin, pearls were thought by the Ancient Greeks to be tears of the gods, and would help a bride to avoid crying if she wore them on her wedding day. Even if you doubt their powers of tear-drying, pearls are said to represent purity and new beginnings, making them the perfect attire for a wedding.
5. Back to Black
Black is the new white this year! The daring side of the 2018 wedding continues with noir splashed all over the catwalk at New York Fashion Week, as well as plunging necklines, split skirts, and sheer numbers that banish the meringue to distant memory. If you don’t fancy going full-scale Maleficent with your gown, you can add a stylish monochrome touch with a slender black bow or a subtle trim.
6. Cape it Real
Speaking of huge wedding gown looks for 2018, the cape is set to be the ultimate wedding cover-up this year. Perfect for autumn and winter, the cape provides the Wonder Woman look while keeping you comfortably warm and effortlessly stylish. Balancing the look of a plunging neckline or off the shoulder dress, the cape is an absolute must-have accessory that’s been on the trend horizon and is about to take off. From a short and sweet knee length cape to a cascading sparkly number, every bride deserves a touch of superhero glamour.
7. Copper Embellishments
We’ve seen plenty of industrial copper and pretty rose-gold glinting all over Pinterest for our homes, but for 2018 we’re expecting to see it adorning our wedding tables too. From copper cutlery to metallic tea light holders, these small touches are highly effective and will bring your décor to life. Lanterns will look mesmerising when lit, and a metallic coppery leaf on your wedding cake will make it a show-stopper well worthy of Instagram.
8. Quirky Desserts
We love imaginative desserts, from a cupcake alternative to the traditional 3-tiers, to sweet stations complete with stripy paper bags for guests to help themselves. 2018 is predicted to see the rise of the dessert table in lieu of a sweet course, where you can please everyone with an array of tempting treats. From mini cheesecakes, doughnuts and macarons to build-your-own waffle stations with fruit and chocolate toppings, your dessert table may well make your guests feel like they’re having the best day of their life too! As the evening draws in, why not treat your guests to a hot chocolate with whipped cream to satisfy their sweet tooth – the perfect way to wrap up a romantic winter wedding.
9. Intimate Gatherings
Finally, you have permission to be ruthless with your guest list. Striking off Great Auntie Ethel and your other half’s old workmates has never been so in… At Burnham Beeches Hotel we can accommodate up to 120 guests for the daytime reception and a maximum of 180 guests for evening celebrations, with 82 rooms available for discounted overnight rates. While we love a big party, we’re expecting many more intimate groups in 2018, as couples opt to have only the people who matter the most at their special day. This leaves more room in the wedding budget to make your day exactly as you dreamed it would be...
10. Get Creative
Plain old white card simply won’t make the cut any more when it comes to place settings! Think outside the box and make them part of your table décor or your overall theme. We love edible or drinkable treats, such as mini pots of local honey or a tiny bottle of home-brewed beer. You could use polaroid photographs of your guests for a really personal touch, or give living plants for them to take home (succulents are great for this.) Doubling the place card with a wedding favour is a great way to be creative while saving on costs, and giving each guest a personalised gift to remember your wedding day.
11. Be Transparent
Transparent elements are the way to go for a modern, airy feel to your wedding day. Light, bright spaces are in, with glass details on tables, seating plans written on huge mirrors and semi-transparent paper used for stationary. The stunning Windsor Suite at Burnham Beeches creates a beautiful bright space in which to get married, and is one of many wonderful features that make our venue so special.
