Q&A with Kayleigh Gillow
Q How long have you been in your role as a wedding planner?
I took on the role of Weddings & Events Coordinator at the hotel in July 2018. I was thrown in at the deep end in the hectic whirlwind of peak wedding season and completed 15 weddings within my first two months, but I can honestly say it was the best way for me to learn and get to grips with how wedding days run here at Burnham Beeches Hotel. I do have previous experience in the events department and have always had a passion for planning and organising.
Q What’s the best thing about your job?
I always feel quite a lot of pressure on the morning of the Wedding and understandably the venue gets hectic with suppliers coming and going. I often don’t get a chance to slow down and take in how amazing the venue looks until I show the Bride & Groom the Wedding Breakfast room before anyone else. It quickly becomes quite an emotional moment for them and therefore becomes a reality for me. After all, they have trusted me to create their ideal vision of the function room and it makes my hard work feel very rewarding to see their reactions.
Q What’s your favourite part of a wedding day?
I really love the Reception Drinks and Photos, it’s the first chance guests get to congratulate and celebrate with the newlyweds. It’s also the first chance that you get to see the Bride and Groom completely relax now that the all-important nerve-wracking vows are over and done with. Everyone is just in really good spirits, especially if the weather is good too!
Q What is your role on the big day?
On the day of the Wedding I work with the Event Manager to ensure the day runs smoothly and is as stress-free for the Bride and Groom as possible! I work alongside the couples chosen suppliers to set up the ceremony and wedding breakfast just as they have requested. Before and after the ceremony I guide the Wedding guests to where they need to be and try my best to keep to the allocated timings agreed and set with the Bride and Groom in previous meetings.
Q What should a couple look for in their perfect venue?
When viewing potential Wedding Venues, it is very important to ask a lot of questions. However, when walking around the venue I would suggest observing how attentive the staff are, how clean and tidy the facilities are, what the lighting and acoustics of the function rooms are like and how the venue aligns with the visions you have for the day. Make sure you leave the venue with a clear mindset whether it realistically suits your budget and that you are happy with the inclusions of the packages they are offering, or if not, that they allow flexibility to cater for your requirements.
Q What would be your best piece of advice for a couple starting to plan their wedding?
Have faith that all of your efforts with be worth it! The wedding plans can sometimes become stressful and it is often the smaller details that will give you a sleepless night; it is really important to remember that the planning process is meant to be fun and enjoyable! Whilst planning try to keep in mind and accept the fact that you can’t please everyone, remember that this is your day so make it about what you want.
Q What are your last-minute tips for a bride the night before the wedding?
Let go of last minute wed-min or pass this onto bridesmaids/maid of honour/wedding coordinator; your months of hard work are finally over and it’s time to relax! If you are staying at your chosen wedding venue the night before the Wedding, then I would advise a pyjama and pamper evening with your bridesmaids. Focus on yourself, try not to overthink, turn your phone to silent, drink a lot of water and try to relax as much as possible- it may be worth getting an early night in as the following day is sure to be an early start.
